According to TechCrunch, India’s IT ministry issued an immediate order on Friday demanding technical changes to prevent the dissemination of sexualized and unlawful material.
The High Stakes of India Government X Grok AI Regulation
The crackdown follows complaints from lawmakers and users who flagged instances of Grok generating AI-altered images of women and sexualized content involving minors. The ministry's order states that X must take corrective action to restrict "nudity, sexualization, or otherwise unlawful" material. Failure to comply could jeopardize the platform’s safe harbor protections, leaving X and its officers liable for all user-generated content under Indian criminal law.
This move is a critical test case for global AI governance. While Elon Musk has frequently challenged India's content regulation in court, arguing against government overreach, the visibility of Grok's outputs makes the situation more politically sensitive. Neither X nor xAI have officially commented on the ministry's latest directive as of publication.
