Poland Intercepts Russian Spy Plane, Tracks 'Smuggler Balloons' from Belarus Amid Holiday Tensions
Poland's air force intercepted a Russian reconnaissance aircraft and tracked suspected smuggler balloons from Belarus, heightening tensions on NATO's eastern flank during the holidays.
Tensions over NATO's eastern flank flared up over the holidays. Poland announced its air force intercepted a Russian reconnaissance aircraft over the Baltic Sea, just hours after tracking suspected smuggling balloons from neighboring Belarus that prompted a temporary airspace closure.
A Busy Holiday on Poland's Border
The Operational Command of the Polish Armed Forces said in a post on X on Thursday that its fighter jets had "intercepted, visually identified, and escorted a Russian reconnaissance aircraft" flying near Polish airspace. The night before, Polish forces tracked unknown “objects” flying from the direction of Belarus, forcing Warsaw to temporarily close civilian airspace in the country's northeast.
After a detailed analysis, the command determined these were "most likely smuggling balloons, moving in the direction and at the speed of the wind." No further details on the number or size of the balloons were disclosed.
Warsaw's Response: "Under Full Control"
Polish Defence Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz stated on X that the incidents didn't pose an immediate threat to Poland's security. "All provocations... were under the full control of the Polish Army," he said, thanking the "nearly 20,000 of our soldiers who, during the Holidays, watch over our safety." According to Reuters, the Belarusian and Russian embassies in Warsaw did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
A Pattern of 'Hybrid Attacks'
The use of smuggler balloons from Belarus isn't new to the region. Neighboring Lithuania has repeatedly experienced air traffic disruptions, including airport closures, due to similar incidents. Lithuania has called the balloons, used to transport cigarettes, a "hybrid attack" by Belarus, a close ally of Russia. Belarus has denied responsibility. These alerts come three months after a more significant incursion between September 9 and 10, when Poland and NATO forces shot down over a dozen Russian drones over Polish airspace.
