One Post Per Minute: xAI Grok NCII Investigation Targets Elon Musk

It's a digital wildfire. Elon Musk's AI startup, xAI, is under heavy fire as the California Attorney General launched a massive xAI Grok NCII investigation into its chatbot. The probe follows reports of Grok generating nonconsensual sexually explicit material at an alarming rate.

The Scope of the xAI Grok NCII Investigation

According to Reuters and data from Copyleaks, roughly one image per minute was posted on X featuring sexualized content generated by Grok. A deeper analysis revealed a staggering 6,700 images per hour over a 24-hour period between January 5 and 6, 2026. California AG Rob Bonta stated that this material has been used to harass individuals across the internet, prompting an urgent call for xAI to implement stronger safeguards.

Musk Denies Knowledge While Global Pressure Mounts

Musk hasn't stayed silent. He claimed he's "not aware of any naked underage images generated by Grok," asserting the number is "literally zero." He attributed the incidents to "adversarial hacking" of prompts. However, the international community isn't buying it. Countries like Indonesia and Malaysia have temporarily blocked access to the chatbot, while the EU Commission and UK's Ofcom have opened their own formal inquiries under new online safety laws.

Legal Teeth: The Take It Down Act

The investigation will lean heavily on the Take It Down Act, a federal law that criminalizes the distribution of nonconsensual intimate images. Penalties are severe: up to three years imprisonment for child sexual abuse material (CSAM) and two years for adult NCII. While xAI recently moved certain image features behind a premium paywall, critics argue that the "spicy mode" still allows for ethical lapses.
