At least 116 prisoners have been released in Venezuela just nine days after the United States abducted Nicolas Maduro. The Venezuelan government announced the news on Monday, marking a significant shift in the nation's domestic landscape since Donald Trump declared Washington was "in charge" of the Latin American country.

Venezuela's Ministry of Penitentiary Services stated the individuals were freed for acts "undermining the stability of the nation." However, the human rights group Foro Penal countered these figures, claiming only 41 people were actually released. Despite the discrepancy, the move has already impacted international ties; Italy pledged to upgrade relations with Caracas after two of its citizens were among those set free.

The geopolitical vacuum left by Maduro, who is currently held in a New York prison on drug-trafficking charges, remains volatile. While Trump celebrated the release in a "big way," human rights organizations estimate that 800 to 1,200 political prisoners are still behind bars across the country.

Diplomatic Tensions and the Papal Audience

Opposition leader Maria Corina Machado met with Pope Leo XIV on Monday. The Pontiff issued a strong appeal to protect Venezuela’s sovereignty and respect civil rights. Interestingly, while Machado dedicated her Nobel Peace Prize to Trump, the U.S. President has recently sidestepped the opposition group, recognizing Vice President Delcy Rodriguez as interim president instead.
