Allies at Odds: Saudi Arabia Issues Ultimatum to Yemen Separatists

Riyadh Demands Immediate Withdrawal
Saudi Defense Minister Khalid bin Salman said on December 27, 2025, that "it's time" for STC troops to let reason prevail by leaving Hadramout and al-Mahra. According to the Saudi Press Agency, Brigadier General Turki al-Maliki announced that any movements violating de-escalation efforts'll be dealt with directly and immediately.
Fragmenting Alliance Under Pressure
The STC recently took over large chunks of territory from the Saudi-backed government. While both groups are allies against the Houthi rebels, the STC seeks to revive an independent South Yemen. Reports from Al Jazeera indicate that about 15,000 Saudi-backed fighters are amassed near the border, ready for orders.
In Washington, Secretary of State Marco Rubio urged restraint and diplomacy. Meanwhile, the UAE, which has historically backed the STC, said it welcomed Saudi efforts, trying to present a united front despite rising tensions between the two Gulf allies.
