After a slight dip in 2024 to 24.6 billion, the market bounced back in 2025 with 25.5 billion downloads. Engagement also hit a record high, with users spending 1.23 trillion hours in apps, up from 1.13 trillion the previous year. This growth was primarily fueled by the explosion of Generative AI assistants and the rise of microdrama platforms.

Downloads for generative AI apps skyrocketed from 198 million in 2024 to 602 million in 2025. Companies like OpenAI and Google spurred this demand by offering localized features and even free access to premium plans.
