The walled garden has opened its gates. In a move that signals a major shift in its AI strategy, Apple has officially confirmed a partnership with Google to integrate Gemini AI models into its ecosystem, including the voice assistant Siri.

According to a joint statement, Apple determined that Google's technology provides the "most capable foundation" for future Apple foundational models. While the companies haven't disclosed the exact financial terms, industry reports suggest Apple could be paying $1 billion for access to Google's advanced AI capabilities.

This decision comes after Apple reportedly tested competing technologies from OpenAI and Anthropic. The multi-year deal is non-exclusive, allowing Apple to maintain its trademark flexibility while addressing long-standing criticisms that Siri has lagged behind modern AI standards. Though Apple Intelligence launched in 2024 with basic summarization tools, the Google partnership aims to deliver a far more personalized and powerful experience.

Navigating Antitrust and Privacy Concerns

The timing of the deal is complex, as Google remains under heavy regulatory scrutiny. In August 2024, a federal judge ruled that Google held an illegal monopoly in search, partly by paying Apple roughly $38 billion between 2021 and 2022 for default placement. More recently, in December 2025, final remedies were issued that limit these long-term exclusive agreements.

To mitigate these concerns, Apple emphasized that its privacy standards will not be compromised. Much of the AI processing will continue to happen on-device or via controlled infrastructure. Users can expect the Gemini-powered Siri overhaul to debut in the spring of 2026.
