Lego's starting a new era of play by giving its most iconic piece a digital soul. According to The Verge, the Lego Group unveiled the 'Smart Brick' at CES 2026. This tiny computer fits perfectly inside a standard 2x4 brick and is set to ship in Lego Star Wars sets starting March 1, 2026.

It's not like the bulky Lego Mario figures that required AAA batteries. This new system uses integrated NFC technology to detect nearby smart tiles and minifigures. When the brick senses an object, it triggers lights and sounds, such as humming lightsabers or roaring starship engines. The company claims it'll make entire sets come to life without changing the classic Lego aesthetic.
Seamless Interaction with Smart Play
The "Smart Play" initiative aims to bridge the gap between physical building and digital immersion. These bricks can communicate with each other and recognize specific characters. For instance, a Star Wars minifigure might trigger a specific musical theme when placed near the core. This move is seen as a significant step for a company that has spent years trying to perfect the 'Phygital' (physical + digital) experience.
