Boston Dynamics Google DeepMind Atlas Partnership: Powering Humanoids with AI Brains

Two titans of technology are joining forces to build a robot that finally thinks like a human. Boston Dynamics and Google DeepMind announced a landmark partnership on Monday at CES 2026, aiming to integrate cutting-edge AI foundation models into the next-generation humanoid robot, Atlas. This move marks a significant leap toward creating general-purpose robots capable of handling complex human needs.

The collaboration centers on leveraging Gemini Robotics, a multimodal generative AI model developed by Google DeepMind. Unlike previous iterations that focused on athletic performance, this partnership aims to give Atlas the ability to perceive, reason, and interact with humans naturally. Carolina Parada, senior director of robotics at Google DeepMind, noted that the goal is to develop the world’s most advanced robot foundation model.

From Research Labs to Hyundai Factory Floors

This isn't just a science experiment. Boston Dynamics, owned by Hyundai Motor Group, confirmed that the new Atlas is already in production and headed for deployment at a Hyundai factory. The company is building on its commercial success with Spot, which is active in over 40 countries, and the warehouse robot Stretch, which has processed more than 20 million boxes globally.

Alberto Rodriguez, director of Atlas behavior, emphasized that for humanoids to deliver on their promise, they must go beyond athletic feats. "They have to be able to interact with people naturally," he stated during the conference.
