Japan Braces for Weekend Blizzard With Up to 80cm of Snow Forecast

A major winter storm is set to blanket large parts of Japan this weekend. The country's weather agency issued a stark warning on Friday, December 26, for powerful winds, blizzards, and high waves, threatening widespread traffic disruption during the busy holiday period.

According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, the rough weather is driven by a strong winter pressure pattern. Western Japan is forecast to be hit on Friday, with eastern and northeastern parts of the country expected to see severe conditions through Saturday.

Up to 80cm of Snow in Some Regions

Significant snowfall is predicted in the 24 hours leading up to 6 a.m. Saturday. The agency announced that the Hokuriku region in central Japan could receive as much as 80 centimeters of snow.

Officials are warning of dangers beyond heavy snowfall. The forecast also includes the possibility of lightning, tornadoes, and avalanches.
