Tokyo 3-Year-Old Boy Falls to Death While Parents Visit Shrine on New Year

A New Year's blessing turned into a parent's worst nightmare. A 3-year-old boy fell to his death from a 9th-floor apartment in Tokyo early Thursday after being left home alone.

According to the Kyodo news agency, an emergency call was placed around 1:25 a.m. on January 1, 2026. The boy, who is believed to have fallen from his family's balcony, was rushed to a hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

Left Alone During New Year Celebrations

The boy's parents told Police they had stepped out to visit a Shrine for the New Year, believing their son was safely asleep. Investigators confirmed the child was unsupervised at the time of the accident. Authorities are now looking into the safety measures of the balcony and the circumstances leading to the fall.
