According to Yonhap News, on January 11, 2026, the DP leadership issued a stern request for Kim to give up his party membership. This move comes as the party prepares to elect a new floor leader later today. DP spokesperson Park Soo-hyeon stated that the party is "leaving open all possibilities," including formal expulsion if Kim refuses to comply.

Despite the mounting pressure, Kim hasn't shown any intention of resigning voluntarily. He reportedly told party officials that he'll not quit even if he faces forced expulsion. DP Chair Jung Chung-rae is said to be weighing public sentiment and party discipline as the scandal threatens the party's image.

The 100 Million Won Bribery and Audio Evidence

The controversy centers on allegations that Kim received money in exchange for political nominations. An audio recording surfaced recently, capturing a conversation between Kim and Rep. Kang Sun-woo regarding the receipt of 100 million won ($68,497) from a city council candidate during the 2022 local elections. Kang has already left the party to become an independent.
