Public Domain Works 2026: Betty Boop and Mickey Mouse Lead the Creative Revolution

Hundreds of iconic 1930 masterpieces are now officially free for everyone. As of January 1, 2026, Public Domain Day marks the expiration of copyrights for legendary characters, books, and songs, opening the floodgates for creative adaptations without legal hurdles or licensing fees.

Betty Boop and Mickey Mouse: 1930 Classics Go Public in 2026

The standout addition this year is the original version of Betty Boop from the Dizzy Dishes cartoon. This early iteration features unique elongated dog ears, a surreal nod to her original canine-inspired design. While Fleischer Studios still maintains trademarks on the fully developed version, this 1930 version is now fair game for creators worldwide.

Disney isn't far behind. Nine different Mickey Mouse cartoons from 1930, along with the very first Mickey comic strips, have joined the public domain. This also includes the debut of 'Rover' (the precursor to Pluto) in the film 'The Chain Gang'.

A Goldmine of Literature and Jazz Standards

Beyond the silver screen, the literary world sees a massive shift. William Faulkner's southern gothic masterpiece 'As I Lay Dying' and Dashiell Hammett's noir classic 'The Maltese Falcon' are now public property. In music, the soulful standard Georgia on My Mind and the jazz favorite 'Dream a Little Dream of Me' can now be reimagined by modern artists without royalty payments.
