Ted Lange Reveals Famous Love Boat Guest Star Snub: "Who Does That to Anybody?"

What happens when a Hollywood legend mistakes a series lead for an extra? Ted Lange, the beloved bartender Isaac Washington from 'The Love Boat,' recently shared a 40-year-old memory of a celebrity encounter that still stings today.

The Handshake Refusal on Set

According to Entertainment Weekly, the 78-year-old actor recounted the story on the 'Still Here Hollywood' podcast. Following the advice of co-star Gavin MacLeod to welcome guest stars, Lange approached a famous visitor. "I said, 'Hey, my name is Ted Lange, welcome to the show,'" he recalled. Instead of a greeting, the guest star yanked his hand away and walked off.

Lange believes his iconic red bartender jacket—worn throughout the show's run from 1977 to 1986—led the guest to believe he was merely an extra. "Even if he did, why would you do that to an extra?" Lange questioned, highlighting the lack of basic professional courtesy.

A Delayed Introduction and Long-Held Regret

The dynamic shifted 30 minutes later when the director introduced Lange as the guest star's scene partner. Suddenly, the actor was all smiles, but the damage was done. Lange revealed that although this person invited him to golf and tennis tournaments for years, he never attended. "I already know who you are, why would I go?" he stated, though he refused to reveal the star's identity.
