Slavin, who knew Forté socially in the tight-knit island community, noted that the loss "hits close to home."

Forté rose to fame in 1996 for his work on the Fugees' landmark album The Score, contributing to hits like 'Cowboys.' His career took a tragic turn in 2000 when he was arrested on drug charges, resulting in a 14-year prison sentence. However, in a rare move, President George W. Bush commuted his sentence in 2008 after a tireless campaign by legendary singer Carly Simon. Since his release, Forté had focused on music that he described as a "time capsule" for his two children.
