Indonesia is looking for a football architect to end an 88-year drought. According to Reuters, the Indonesian football federation has hired former Canada coach John Herdman to lead the men's national team following their failure to qualify for the 2026FIFA World Cup.

The 50-year-old Englishman is stepping in to replace Patrick Kluivert, who departed the role in October2025. Herdman arrives with a reputation for being more than just a tactician; the federation described him as an "architect" with a proven record of navigating teams to the world's biggest stage. Domestic reports suggest he's signed a two-year contract with an option for two additional years.

From World Cup Success to New Challenges

Herdman's track record is impressive. He led Canada's women to the 2015 World Cup and repeated the feat with the men's team in 2022. This is exactly the experience Indonesia needs, having not reached the tournament since 1938, when it competed as the Dutch East Indies.
