“It’s impossible to replace Bruno,” Amorim told reporters on Wednesday, ahead of Friday’s home game against Newcastle United. “A lot of people need to step up.” Fernandes, who has created more chances than any other player in the Premier League this season, was forced off at halftime during Sunday’s 2-1 defeat by Aston Villa. His absence removes United's creative fulcrum and set-piece organizer in one fell swoop.

Amorim acknowledged the void, stating, “It’s not just the creation. On every set piece, he is the guy organising the team... Sometimes we rely on Bruno for the organisation and creation.” According to The Times, United are reportedly hopeful Fernandes could return for the Manchester derby on January 17, though the manager declined to specify a timeline.

A Mounting Injury List

United's problems extend far beyond their captain. Amorim confirmed that midfielder Kobbie Mainoo will also miss the Newcastle game. They join defenders Harry Maguire (hamstring) and Matthijs de Ligt (back) on the sidelines. To make matters worse, Bryan Mbeumo and Amad Diallo are away on international duty at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

Despite the depleted squad, Amorim is turning to youth, having given 18-year-oldsJack Fletcher and Shea Lacey their debuts against Villa. “I think Jack Fletcher did a very good job,” he added. “I am confident we can win any game. We have some problems, but I believe in the team.”
