US Forces in Korea Debut Upgraded 'Steel Rain' Rocket System in First Live-Fire Drill

The `keyword`U.S. military` stationed in `keyword`South Korea` has conducted its first-ever live-fire drill with the new M270A2 multiple launch rocket system (MLRS), a significant move showcasing the technological modernization and readiness of the alliance's firepower on the Korean Peninsula. The `keyword`Eighth Army` announced in a statement on Tuesday that the exercise, dubbed 'Steel Rain,' took place on `stat`December 11` at `keyword`Camp Casey` in Dongducheon, a city just north of Seoul.

A Display of Modernized Firepower

The drill marks the inaugural firing of the upgraded M270A2 system in `keyword`Korea`. In its statement, titled "'Steel Rain' on the Peninsula: M270A2 MLRS Conducts Inaugural Live Fire in Korea," the `keyword`U.S. military` said the event highlighted its "readiness and reinforced the unit's ability to rapidly execute operations when called upon." The M270A2 features a modernized fire control system and launcher-loader module, enhancing its precision and combat effectiveness over previous versions.

U.S. Army Lt. Col. Daniel Han, the artillery battalion commander, emphasized the drill's dual message. "To be able to (be the first battalion to shoot the new launcher systems) in `keyword`Korea` sends a strong signal of how the `keyword`U.S. Army` is continuing to modernize, continuing to transform," he said.

He also noted its importance for the alliance with the `keyword`Republic of Korea` (ROK). "It also tells our allies, the ROK Army, that as they're modernizing their long range precision shooter platforms... we're right there side by side with them," Han stated, framing the upgrade as a shared transformation to show that "we're all in this together." This coordinated modernization is seen as a direct response to evolving threats in the region, particularly from `keyword`North Korea`.
