Today marks the 25th anniversary of Wikipedia, the world's largest free encyclopedia. But as it hits this quarter-century milestone, the celebratory mood is overshadowed by an existential threat. While AI companies thrive on Wikipedia’s data, the site itself is seeing a massive drop in traffic and a graying volunteer base that threatens its very foundation.
Wikipedia 25th Anniversary AI Crisis and the Political Crossfire
The encyclopedia is currently fighting a war on two fronts. On one side, political figures like Elon Musk have labeled it 'Wokepedia,' alleging control by far-left activists. On the other, the Heritage Foundation has threatened to target individual editors. This is a stark departure from 2010, when Wikipedia's lawyers famously stood their ground against an FBI demand to remove its logo from the site.
The Irony of Model Collapse and Traffic Decline
The rise of AI has created a deep irony. Between 2022 and 2025, Wikipedia lost more than 1 billion visits per month. Users are increasingly consuming information through AI fragments delivered by bots rather than visiting the source. However, AI needs Wikipedia; if these models train recursively on their own synthetic data, they risk 'model collapse.' The human-vetted information provided by volunteers remains the high-quality fuel AI requires.
Replenishing the volunteer pool is the next great hurdle. Gen Z often views unpaid digital labor as a scam in a hyper-capitalist economy. To bridge the gap, Wikipedia is experimenting with social media, leveraging accounts like 'Depths of Wikipedia' and publishing over 800 short-form videos to engage younger audiences. Whether this converts viewers into editors remains to be seen.
