The Wizard isn't apologizing anymore. In Wicked: For Good, the classic song Wonderful gets a sharp, aggressive makeover that contrasts heavily with the original Broadway production. Stephen Schwartz, the legendary composer and lyricist, revealed to Entertainment Weekly that this transformation was essential to fit Jeff Goldblum's darker interpretation of the character.

Those familiar with the 2003 original cast recording recall Joel Grey's Wizard as a demure figure claiming to be 'blown here by the winds of chance.' However, Goldblum's Wizard enters with a cynical new intro about 'buying into blarney' and 'sham and hokum.' Schwartz explained that this version of the Wizard knows better and is actively challenging Elphaba's point of view, demanding entirely new lyrics and music.

Integrating Glinda into the Emerald City Reunion

Beyond the tone shift, the film version integrates Glinda (played by Ariana Grande) into the number. Schwartz noted that the team realized the central relationship between Elphaba and Glinda was absent for too long after the events of 'Defying Gravity.' By having Elphaba visit Glinda secretly before the Good Witch's wedding, the scene creates a 2-fold improvement: it reunites the duo sooner and makes Elphaba’s potential cooperation with the government more persuasive through a friend's appeal.
