回顧歷史，印度的外交政策向來以務實與獨立自主著稱。在美蘇冷戰期間，印度雖高舉「不結盟」大旗，但其政策卻明顯向蘇聯傾斜。此一立場在1962年中印邊境衝突後尤為顯著，當時莫斯科大幅增加了對新德里的軍事援助，以抗衡中國。這段歷史表明，印度在面臨地緣政治壓力時，會毫不猶豫地尋求對其國家利益最有利的戰略夥伴。
