According to Reuters, Williams will surpass the record previously held by Japan's Kimiko Date, who was 44 when she played in Melbourne in 2015. This marks Williams' first appearance in the main draw at Melbourne Park since 2021, signaling a remarkable comeback for the American icon who has faced limited playing time in recent seasons.

"I’m excited to be back in Australia and looking forward to competing," Williams stated on Friday. She has deep roots at the tournament, having reached the singles final in 2003 and 2017, and securing four doubles titles at the event. Her return follows a 16-month hiatus that ended at the 2025 US Open.

Preparation and Peer Praise

Williams isn't jumping straight into the deep end. She's scheduled to start her preparations at the Auckland Classic next week, followed by the Hobart International. These lead-up tournaments will be crucial before the Grand Slam begins on January 18.
