Four decades in power, and the count continues. Uganda's President Yoweri Museveni has secured a 7th term in office, winning 71.65% of the vote. The electoral commission announced the results on January 17, 2026, following a tense election cycle marked by an internet blackout and widespread opposition suppression.

Museveni, 81, defeated his primary challenger, Bobi Wine, who garnered 24.72% of the ballots. While the victory was widely expected, AFP reports that the mood at pro-government rallies was orchestrated rather than spontaneous. Meanwhile, Bobi Wine has labeled the results a "sham," claiming massive fraud and reporting that he remains under effective house arrest.

International observers, including former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan representing the African Union, noted that while the voting day itself was largely peaceful, the preceding internet shutdown and reports of abductions have eroded public trust. The United Nations had previously warned that the campaign was marred by "widespread repression."

The Legacy of a Rebel Leader Turned President

Since taking power in 1986, Museveni has been credited by supporters for bringing stability and economic growth to Uganda. However, his critics point to his systematic dismantling of constitutional limits. He has twice changed the law to remove age and term restrictions, ensuring his stay in power spans nearly half a century. The National Resistance Movement also maintains a commanding lead in parliament, further consolidating his control.
