According to Rolling Stone, in an interview published on January 21, 2026, Gass compared his relationship with Black to a long-term marriage. "You go through these ups and downs, and try to understand your partner," he explained. He assured fans that while they needed a break, the band's journey isn't over yet, stating, "We will be back. We will return."

The controversy erupted in July 2024 during a show in Sydney, just hours after an assassination attempt on Donald Trump. When presented with a birthday cake, Gass quipped, "Don't miss Trump next time." The backlash was immediate. Black, "blindsided" by the comment, canceled the remainder of their tour and put all creative plans on hold to distance the brand from political violence.
