This ultimate trade-off comes after Carol receives devastating news. The Others have been secretly using stem cells from her frozen eggs to tailor a hive mind virus specifically to her. With only a month or two left before she's absorbed, the betrayal is absolute. For Seehorn, this revelation was the key. "The fact that they've been stealing my eggs was the first atom bomb," she told Mashable in an interview.

From Figurative to Literal Nuke

One figurative bomb quickly begets a literal one. Realizing The Others will give her whatever she desires, Carol goes nuclear. Seehorn explained the choice as an expression of pure, unfiltered anger. "Carol is quite impulsive, as we've seen, and her rage is something that she's had to suppress," she said. "But [in the finale] she's allowing herself to go ahead and be reactionary, like, 'Screw this. These people have crossed the final line.'"

So, what's her plan? Is the nuke just a warning shot, or does she intend to use it? Seehorn admits she doesn't actually know what Carol will do. "I gave it a lot of thought. I did ask [creator] Vince [Gilligan]. He did not have a specific answer." For Seehorn, the performer, that uncertainty is the most interesting part. "I actually think it's more important... that Carol is impulsive in asking for the biggest, most violent, threatening thing she can think of before she even knows what she would do with it."
