Handshakes in Florida haven't stopped the drones in Russia. Just hours after President-elect Donald Trump and President Volodymyr Zelenskyy signaled progress toward a peace deal, Russia alleged a massive Ukrainian drone strike targeting President Vladimir Putin's private residence.

Allegations Surrounding the Putin Valdai Residence Drone Attack

According to Al Jazeera and official reports, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov claimed on December 29, 2025, that Ukraine launched 91 drones at the Valdai residence in the Novgorod region. The property sits approximately 360km north of Moscow. The Russian Ministry of Defence stated that air defenses intercepted 49 drones over Bryansk, 1 over Smolensk, and 41 over Novgorod, with no reported injuries.

Dmitry Medvedev, Deputy Chairman of the Security Council, used inflammatory language on X to accuse Kyiv of trying to derail the settlement process. Kremlin aide Yury Ushakov highlighted that the strike occurred "practically immediately" after the Trump- Zelenskyy talks in Florida, warning that Russia would now toughen its negotiating position.

Kyiv Denies Claims as Peace Prospects Dim

President Zelenskyy firmly denied the allegations, calling the story a "complete fabrication" designed to justify more Russian strikes on Ukraine. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha noted that Russia has failed to provide any plausible evidence for the attack, suggesting it's a pretext to impede the US-led peace process.

Trump's reaction was mixed. He initially expressed anger at the reports but later told reporters "we'll find out" when asked about verified intelligence. Meanwhile, leaders from the UAE, India, and Pakistan condemned the reported targeting of the residence, echoing concerns about regional stability during sensitive negotiations.
