The 4-time Grand Slam champion struggled during her opening match for Japan at the United Cup on Friday. Osaka lost to Greece's Maria Sakkari in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2. Throughout the match, she appeared visibly fatigued and was seen coughing between points.

According to the Associated Press, Osaka revealed she caught a virus from her two-year-old daughter, Shai, during the Christmas break. "I’m not operating at the percent that I want to be operating at," Osaka admitted, noting that the illness hindered what had been a very successful offseason training block.

Despite the setback, the former world number one remains optimistic about her chances at the Australian Open, which kicks off on January 18.
