Michael J. Fox Sends Heartfelt Letter to Crispin Glover in 2025 Memoir

"We didn't talk much during production." After 40 years, Michael J. Fox finally shared the words he never got to say to his Back to the Future costar, Crispin Glover.

According to Entertainment Weekly, Fox reflects on his relationship with the actor who played George McFly in his brand-new memoir, 'Future Boy.' While preparing for the book, Fox rewatched the 1985 classic and found himself so moved by Glover's performance that he decided to reach out. "You are a brilliant actor, and I was thrilled to work with you," Fox wrote in a personal letter to Glover.

Fox admits that Glover's style was unlike anyone else's on set. While Christopher Lloyd stayed locked into the script, Glover never did the same thing twice. This unpredictability made him "phenomenal in the role" but also caused visible tension with director Robert Zemeckis and screenwriter Bob Gale.

Their collaboration actually began before the time-traveling trilogy. Glover guest-starred in a 1984 episode of 'Family Ties.' Fox recalls Glover winning the biggest laughs of the episode by simply being naturally funny, seemingly unaware of the audience—a trait he carried into his iconic performance as Marty McFly's father.

Creative Rift and the Sequel Exit

Glover famously didn't return for the sequels, where he was replaced by Jeffrey Weissman. The memoir touches upon Glover's past revelations that he questioned the film's moral stance—specifically the idea that Marty's success resulted in a purely "financial reward." While this questioning led to hostility at the time, Fox's new letter seeks to bridge that decades-old gap by focusing on the artistic brilliance Glover brought to the screen.
