The Legend of Wheezin' Steven: A James Brown Parody with a Twist

During an appearance on Late Night With Seth Meyers, Thompson detailed the character of 'Wheezin' Steven.' According to the actor, the sketch featured a musical act inspired by James Brown, but with a debilitating case of asthma. The central joke? He was physically incapable of finishing a single song.

While James Brown famously performed a theatrical "I can't go on" bit, Steven's struggle was painfully real. Thompson acted out the character's breathless gasps, gesturing for "one sec" while struggling for air. However, instead of laughter, Seth Meyers noted that the live audience was "constantly fearing that he had had a full heart attack" on stage.

The Thin Line Between Comedy and Concern

The sketch was ultimately axed because the audience's concern outweighed the humor. It's a common fate for experimental comedy; even Jack Black recently shared a similar story about his cut sketch 'Boys Night Out.' In both cases, the performers agreed with creator Lorne Michaels that some things are better left on the cutting room floor.
