Less than three months into her historic tenure, Japan's first female Prime Minister is ready to roll the dice. Sanae Takaichi has signaled her intention to dissolve parliament's lower house as early as next week, seeking to solidify her power base while her approval ratings remain high.

According to the Kyodo news agency, Takaichi plans to declare the dissolution of the Diet on January 23, 2026. The move aims to capitalize on the current momentum of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) and its partner, the Japan Innovation Party. Tokyo shares reacted enthusiastically to the news, jumping more than 3% on Tuesday as investors anticipate a more stable legislative environment.

Takaichi's agenda focuses on "proactive" fiscal spending and a significant boost to national intelligence capabilities. A bigger majority would give her the political capital to push through these controversial measures. However, the opposition isn't sitting idle. Leaders of the Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan and Komeito are reportedly exploring closer cooperation to counter the LDP's dominance.

Diplomacy Amidst Domestic Maneuvering

While planning her domestic political strike, Takaichi hosted South Korean President Lee Jae Myung in her hometown of Nara on January 13. The summit focused on security and economic ties, providing a statesmanlike backdrop to her election announcement. But the regional picture isn't all friendly; tensions with China continue to simmer following Takaichi's earlier remarks regarding Taiwan.
