Despair is turning into deadly defiance on the streets of Iran. As of January 1, 2026, at least five people have been killed and 17 others injured as demonstrations over the skyrocketing cost of living sweep across the country.

The unrest, which began in Tehran just days ago, has rapidly spread to provincial cities. In Azna, located 300km southwest of the capital, three protesters were reportedly killed. Further south in Lordegan, two more lost their lives. Reports from the semiofficial Fars news agency indicate that security forces used tear gas to disperse crowds targeting administrative buildings and banks.

The economic backdrop is grim. Western sanctions and the fallout from June air strikes by Israel and the United States on nuclear infrastructure have crippled the local economy. With inflation hovering at 40%, shopkeepers and university students have formed an unlikely alliance, demanding urgent relief from the government.

A Government Caught Between Dialogue and Crackdown

President Masoud Pezeshkian is attempting a delicate balancing act. He has acknowledged the "legitimate demands" of the protesters, warning that failing to solve livelihood issues would be disastrous. However, the hardline elements within the IRGC and the Basij volunteer force have already reported their first casualty—a 21-year-old member killed in Kouhdasht—signaling a potential shift toward a more aggressive military response.
