According to Reuters and state media, the Iranian military announced on Saturday, January 10, 2026, that it'd safeguard public property against what it called "enemy plots." The elite Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) also declared that the country's security is a "red line." These statements come as the government steps up efforts to quell a movement sparked by the rising cost of living, which has now morphed into a nationwide demand to end the clerical system.

The unrest, which began on January 3, has turned iconic locations like Tehran's Grand Bazaar into battlegrounds. Iran Human Rights, a Norway-based NGO, reported that at least 51 protesters, including nine children, have been killed by security forces so far. Meanwhile, the state has imposed a 36-hour nationwide internet blackout to disrupt the protesters' organization.

President Donald Trump didn't mince words on social media, warning Iran's leaders that the U.S. is prepared to launch military attacks if peaceful protesters are killed. This follows Secretary of State Marco Rubio's earlier statement affirming Washington's support for the "brave people of Iran."

In response, Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei slammed the demonstrators as "vandals" and "saboteurs." He accused Trump of having hands "stained with the blood of more than a thousand Iranians," referring to Israel's military strikes in June 2025. The geopolitical tension is further fueled by the exiled son of the former Shah, Reza Pahlavi, who urged citizens to seize city centers and hinted at his imminent return to the homeland.
