Casualties and Service Disruptions

Emergency services have confirmed that 73 injured passengers were rushed to six different hospitals across the Andalusia province. In the wake of the crash, all train services between Madrid and southern cities have been suspended for Monday, January 19.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen expressed her condolences on X, stating that she's following the "terrible news" from Cordoba closely. Investigators are now focusing on why the first train derailed and whether automated safety systems failed to prevent the subsequent collision.
