The disruption began on the morning of January 4, 2026, when a critical failure in the radio communication system was detected. Athens International Airport has seen more than 90 flights affected, while Thessaloniki Airport was forced to close completely. Root Cause: Antenna Failure in Gerania

Panagiotis Psarros, chair of the Association of Greek Air Traffic Controllers, told ERT that all frequencies were suddenly lost. "We couldn't communicate with aircraft in the sky," he said. Preliminary investigations suggest the blackout was caused by an antenna failure in the Gerania Mountains near Athens.

While Greece typically manages over 600 scheduled flights per day, current operations have slowed to a crawl. Although some departures have resumed—at a rate of 35 aircraft per hour—the system remains unable to accept inbound flights, creating a massive logistical bottleneck for the start of the working week.
