The perpetrators targeted a branch of the Sparkasse bank in Gelsenkirchen. They didn't go through the front door; instead, they used a large drill to bore through a thick concrete wall from an adjacent parking garage. Once inside the underground vault, the thieves had plenty of time. Police believe the gang remained inside for several days over the long holiday weekend, systematically forcing open more than 3,000 safe deposit boxes—over 95% of the vault's total capacity.

The crime only came to light early Monday when a fire alarm was triggered. Investigators found a massive hole in the wall, and witnesses reported seeing several men carrying large bags in the garage stairwell over the weekend.
