Shaking hands but keeping fists clenched. The UK and France have signed a declaration of intent to deploy forces to Ukraine if a peace deal is finalized with Russia. It's a move designed to transform verbal promises into a physical deterrent against future invasions.

According to Reuters, British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer announced the plan following high-level talks in Paris. The allies intend to establish "military hubs" across Ukraine and build protected facilities for weaponry. "This paves the way for the legal framework under which British, French, and partner forces could operate on Ukrainian soil," Starmer stated.

The "Coalition of the Willing" meeting also included Jared Kushner, Donald Trump's special envoy, and top US negotiator Steve Witkoff. The allies proposed that the US would take the lead in monitoring any ceasefire, providing the "durable security guarantees" that Kyiv has long demanded.

Peace Deal Progress Amid Territorial Deadlock

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky recently noted that a peace deal is 90% ready. However, the remaining 10%—primarily concerning territory and security—remains a massive hurdle. Russia currently controls about 75% of Donetsk and 99% of Luhansk.

Vladimir Putin has warned that any foreign troops in Ukraine would be a "legitimate target." Despite this, Zelensky has made it clear that while he won't cede territory, he might consider troop withdrawals if Moscow does the same. The UK and France's commitment is seen as a way to bridge the trust gap in these final negotiations.
