Mali Ferry Accident Timbuktu: A Result of Security Tensions

According to The Associated Press, the accident occurred after nightfall. Local regulations in the Timbuktu region prohibit docking at night to prevent attacks by al-Qaida-linked militants, specifically the JNIM group. Fearing these security measures, the boat's driver reportedly attempted to land at an alternative, unsecured location rather than waiting for sunrise.

The maneuver proved fatal as the vessel hit submerged rocks. Witnesses described a chaotic scene where 38 people, including many women and children, drowned in the darkness. 23 survivors managed to reach the shore.

Heartbreak in the Timbuktu Region

Local resident Moussa Ag Almoubarek Traoré shared a harrowing account, stating he lost 21 family members in the accident. Former deputy Alkaidi Touré noted that the entire region is in mourning, as ferry accidents on the Niger River are becoming more lethal despite their frequency.
