Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie Accuses Euracare Hospital of Negligence in Son's Death

A personal tragedy for world-renowned author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie has ignited a fierce debate over medical standards in Nigeria. Her family alleges that gross negligence at a top private clinic led to the death of her 21-month-old son, Nkanu Nnamdi.

Allegations of Negligence at Euracare Hospital

The family of the celebrated writer claims that Euracare Hospital in Lagos failed to provide adequate care, citing a "litany of failures." According to Dr. Anthea Nwandu, Adichie's sister-in-law, the medical director admitted the toddler received excessive sedation, which triggered a fatal heart attack.

Further allegations suggest the child was left unattended and denied oxygen, resulting in irreversible brain injury. While the family originally shared these accounts privately, a leaked message has brought the "devastating clinical failures" into the public eye, prompting calls for accountability.

Hospital Defense and Official Investigation

In response, Euracare Hospital denied any wrongdoing. They stated that Nkanu arrived "critically ill" after treatment at two other centers and that their staff acted in line with "internationally accepted medical standards." The hospital maintains that the administration of sedation followed established protocols.

The Lagos State Ministry of Health has now stepped in, promising a "thorough and transparent" probe. Dr. Kemi Ogunyemi stated that the government has zero tolerance for professional misconduct and will prosecute any party found culpable.
