According to Entertainment Weekly, Hunnam shared some hilarious yet eerie details during the 2026 Critics Choice Awards held on January 5. The actor had developed a soft-spoken, unsettling voice to portray the notorious body snatcher Ed Gein, but he couldn't seem to turn it off when he got home.

Hunnam's girlfriend, Morgana McNelis, eventually had to lay down the law. "She would say, 'Dude, you have to stop at the voice. At breakfast, it's a little too much,'" Hunnam joked. It's a classic case of a dedicated actor bringing their work home—much to the chagrin of those sharing the house.

From Regret to Critics Choice Nomination

The role was a gamble for Hunnam, who admitted he doesn't typically enjoy the horror genre. He only agreed to the project because of his immense respect for creator Ryan Murphy, stating that 99% of his decision was based on how much he liked Murphy.

Despite initial regrets about taking on such a dark character, Hunnam found the experience rewarding. He focused on finding the "human being" inside the mentally ill and abused man, rather than just the sensationalist horror. That dedication earned him a nomination for Best Actor in a Movie/Miniseries at this year's awards.
