Black Panther 2 Original Script Revealed: The Father-Son Story Chadwick Boseman Never Read

A 180-page masterpiece was ready, but its star never got the chance to read a single word. Ryan Coogler recently shared heartbreaking details about the Black Panther 2 original script that was set to star the late Chadwick Boseman before his tragic passing.

Black Panther 2 Original Script: The Ritual of 8

Speaking on the 'Happy Sad Confused' podcast, Coogler revealed that the initial draft was a deeply personal father-son story. The plot centered on a Wakandan tradition called the "Ritual of 8." In this ritual, when a prince turns 8 years old, he must spend 8 days in the bush with his father, surviving without any tools. During this time, the son can ask any question, and the father is bound by tradition to answer honestly.

Coogler finished the 180-page script just as Boseman's health was failing. "He was too sick to read it, bro," Coogler recalled, noting that the timing simply didn't align. Boseman's death in 2020 forced a complete reimagining of the sequel, which eventually became 'Wakanda Forever'.

Namor's Attack and T'Challa's Struggle

In this version, the antagonist Namor would have launched his attack while T'Challa was in the middle of the ritual. This would have forced T'Challa to balance life-or-death negotiations and battles while keeping his son "joined at his hip" to avoid breaking the sacred ritual. Coogler expressed that he was "obsessed" with this story, which was designed to showcase the full depth of Boseman's acting range.
