Hopkins, now 87 years old, recalled the terrifying incident on December 29, 1975, that changed his life forever. "I was nearly killed by driving my car in a drunken blackout," he admitted in the video. Realizing he was struggling with alcoholism, he made a "fatal phone call" for help, leading to a voice in his head telling him, "It's all over. Now you can start living."

The star of 'The Silence of the Lambs' has been vocal about his journey, especially in his recently published memoir, 'We Did OK, Kid' (October 2025). In the book, he details the wake-up call he received at 37 and the moment he realized he could have killed someone. Now, just two days shy of his 88th birthday, his message remains simple: "Choose life instead of the opposite."
