Hero Ahmed al-Ahmed Honored at SCG During 2026 Ashes Test

A fruit shop owner who chose courage over fear stood at the heart of the Sydney Cricket Ground to receive a nation's gratitude. Ahmed al-Ahmed, the man who disarmed a terrorist at Bondi Beach, was honored with a guard of honour before the fifth Ashes Test.

On January 4, 2026, the cricket world paused to recognize the bravery of first responders and civilians. Among them, al-Ahmed received the loudest cheer from the sold-out crowd. Walking out with his right arm in a sling, the 43-year-old Syrian-born Australian citizen symbolized the spirit of unity that Prime Minister Anthony Albanese praised as a defining national moment.

Al-Ahmed was having lunch at Bondi Beach in December when an anti-Jewish terrorist attack broke out. Two attackers opened fire during a Hanukkah celebration, killing 15 and wounding 42. Without hesitation, al-Ahmed tackled one of the gunmen, preventing further loss of life.

Unity Amidst Heightened Security

The atmosphere at the SCG was heavy with remembrance but filled with resolve. Cricket Australia chief Todd Greenberg called the acts of bravery a reminder of the self-sacrifice that unites Australia. To ensure safety, a massive security operation was took place, featuring uniformed and mounted police patrolling the venue, echoing the high-security measures seen at the Boxing Day Test.
