If the gruff man who tells Ralphie the line for Santa starts 2 miles back sounds familiar, it's because he's Jean Shepherd, the film's narrator and the author of the original stories. Director Bob Clark also has a cameo as the curious neighbor, Swede. Despite these appearances, one main character is never named: The Old Man. Some fans believed Swede calls him "Hal," but the original screenplay confirms the line is actually, "Damn, hell, you say you won it?"

The iconic Leg Lamp is the source of several continuity errors. As The Old Man unpacks his prize, the amount of packing material on his head and back changes between shots—first covered, then completely clean. While the film is set in 1940s Indiana, it was partially filmed in Toronto, which explains the signature red trolley car seen in the background of one scene. Other anachronisms are harder to spot.
