Billy Porter Shares Emotional Health Update After 'Very Challenging' 4-Month Sepsis Battle

Actor and singer Billy Porter has broken his silence following a serious health scare that forced him to withdraw from Broadway's "Cabaret." In an emotional video update to his 2 million Instagram followers on Monday, Porter revealed he's recovering from urosepsis after what he called "a very, very challenging four months."

"Some of you may or may not know that I was in the hospital very ill this fall with urosepsis," Porter explained in the video, his voice breaking with emotion. "I want everybody to know that I am on the road to a full recovery. I'm not there yet, but I'm on the road to that." He tearfully thanked his supporters for their prayers and love, concluding, "I know that I'm alive today." The video's caption humorously echoed the sentiment: "She’s ALIVE!!! Proof of life, PTL!!!"

According to the Sepsis Alliance, urosepsis is a life-threatening condition where a urinary tract infection spreads to the bloodstream, requiring immediate medical intervention.

The diagnosis forced Porter to pull out of the Broadway production of 'Cabaret' in September, where he played the iconic Emcee. His withdrawal led the acclaimed revival to close nearly a month ahead of schedule. At the time, the show's producers released a statement noting, "His doctors are confident that he will make a full recovery but have advised him to maintain a restful schedule."

Looking ahead, Porter is set to appear in the next chapter of the Hunger Games saga, 'The Hunger Games: Sunrise of the Reaping.' He will play Magno Stift, the stylist husband of Glenn Close's villainous character, Drusilla Sickle.
